The Debating and Public Speaking Club takes place on Mondays after school from 3.20-4.20 pm in LG1. The club is taken by Mrs. Siobhan Mullan, the Debating & Public Speaking Coordinator at the College. The club is open to all students in Years 8-14. The club aims to teach the art of Public Speaking, whilst providing fun and enjoyment for all, through enhancing the students’ confidence and their ability to speak comfortably in public to any audience on any given topic.
Through the debating side of the club, the students learn the skills of persuasive oral communication and rebuttal of arguments as well as the ability to formulate coherent points of view through the medium of both oral and written communication. The skills taught through participation in the Public Speaking & Debating Club are transferable and can be applied to any area of Learning for Life and Work.
Time is also spent preparing for competitions. The most prestigious competition which members of the club enter is the bi-annual Mary Ward Public Speaking Competition in which students from Loreto College Coleraine and Loreto Grammar School Omagh speak on a range of topics designed to promote the Loreto ethos and the Loreto values through the art of Public Speaking.
