When set the challenge of learning fifty difficult spellings...in Irish, many would quake in their boots. Not the Year Eight Gaeilgeoirí of Coláiste Loreto, Cúil Raithin. Our Year Eight pupils were presented with the challenge in January of this year and after working at it steadily for a number of weeks, rose to the challenge in February. The competition was under the banner of QUB NICILT. Each pupil had the opportunity to practise with our senior Gaeilgeoirí, who were greatly impressed.
When competition time arrived, although understandably nervous, our pupils did fantastically well. Some of our senior Gaeilgeoirí remarked that they couldn’t spell as quickly as some of our Year Eights!
In each class, we presented a first, second and third place. Our overall Year Eight Spelling Bee winner for 2022 was Ava McKillop, 8E. Ava went on to represent Coláiste Loreto in the QUB NICILT final. This was held in a live Zoom meeting on Friday 11th March, with many other schools participating simultaneously. Ava did fantastically well, impressing her counterparts, the QUB judges and her Irish teachers. Bean Uí Dhoinn and Bean Uí Mhaoláin congratulate her on her endeavours.
The results in each Loreto class were:
8B 1st Oisin Doherty, 2nd Robbie Watkins, 3rd Caolán McCann
8E 1st Ava McKillop, 2nd Christy Moore, 3rd Sara Carlin and Dara Cassidy
8F 1st Eva Marie O’Kane, 2nd Clare Mullan, 3rd Dean McCool
8G Colleen Mullan, 2nd Grace Dickson, 3rd Sinead McSorley.
