21/12/2016 FESTIVE FUND-RAISING AT LORETO COLLEGE

The Autumn term came to its traditional close at Loreto College Coleraine with the annual Mission Day on Tuesday 20th December.  Raising money for the Loreto Missions, the Mission Day is a Christmas tradition at Loreto College.  Students took part in a vast array of fund-raising activities in the course of the day – a beauty salon ‘Pamper Parlour’ and vintage fashion stall, five-a-side soccer tournaments, hotly-contested bingo games and a staff vs. boys soccer match were among the activities on offer.

The focal point of the day was the Loreto Christmas Market, which ran throughout the morning in the College Hall featuring stalls organised by many form classes and year groups.  Popular attractions included a craft stall offering handmade Christmas decorations, a hot chocolate stall, Mr Slushtails, as well as bric-a-brac and cuddly toy stalls for those eager to finish their Christmas shopping. Another very popular attraction was Santa’s Kitchen – the café opened for the day in the Home Economics department, serving a variety of seasonal delicacies throughout the morning.  A lively country jive and line dancing session took place just before lunch, led by Year 14 student Aideen Reid.  In the afternoon, a variety of activities were on offer, including film-and-doughnut relaxation for many pupils and a table quiz for sixth form.  All Year 10 students took part in an inter-class soccer tournament in memory of their much loved and greatly missed classmate Reece Meenan.  The tournament was played in celebration of Reece, who had been a keen footballer, and was won by 10E with 10C finishing as runners up.  Both teams were proud to receive the medals and trophy which had been donated in Reece’s memory.

The Mission Day raised a total in excess of £3300 for its designated cause, which will be received with great appreciation from the Loreto sisters worldwide and especially in the developing world, who have close links with their sister establishment in Coleraine.  The students and the teachers who co-ordinated all these events, especially Mrs Mabel McAleese, Mission Day Coordinator and Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Coordinator, were congratulated on this magnificent total by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College.
