Best Presentation at the North West Young Enterprise awards day

The Young Enterprise group from Loreto College Coleraine scored an impressive success at the final presentation day for Northern Ireland participants in the scheme: just one of a number of successes in its short career.

The group of Year 13 students, under the guidance of Loreto College Business Links co-ordinator Mr Hugh O’Mullan, formed a company which they decided to call Torelo.  Personnel roles were assigned as follows among the students:  Company Director, Chelsea Ferguson Smith, Operations Director Michael McKeown, Finance officers Marc O’Hara and Ronan McShane, Marketing executives Sarah McCloskey and Jan Toner, Secretaries Stephen McGrath and Shane McLaughlin, and IT Executive Shane Rainey.

With roles assigned, the group became involved in a number of projects.  In the weeks approaching Christmas, the students provided a service whereby customers could receive a letter from Santa Claus himself, for a small fee.  This project proved very successful, setting the Torelo team up with funds to embark upon its next project: “Kitchen Couture”.

This new enterprise for the team, undertaken during the Spring term, proved to be an exciting one, with the group designing and marketing aprons to appeal to everyone from the “new man” male chef to the expectant mother.  With designs ranging from steaming kettles to red hot peppers, a “bun in the oven” to glorious grape prints, the aprons, available in a range of colours, were designed by Michael McKeown and Chelsea Ferguson Smith.  Eurowname Printing Company in Coleraine worked in conjunction with the Loreto students to print aprons of a high quality.

On Friday 23rd March, the group attended the Young Enterprise NI scheme’s final presentation day for the North West area, winning high praise for their year’s work and coming away with the award for the Best Presentation on the day.  This was not the students’ first award: on Friday 26th January, the team attended the annual Foyleside Trade Fair, which promotes the Young Enterprise initiative.  The Loreto team took third place at the event, winning £20 and – the highlight of the day for the group – had one of its aprons modelled and purchased by SDLP leader Mark Durkan.

The members of the team, along with their teacher Mr Hugh O’Mullan, were congratulated on their initiative, hard work and well-deserved success so far in the competition by College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan, on behalf of all the staff and students of Loreto.
