Tuesday 13th March saw dual celebrations at Loreto College Coleraine, with the annual European Day organised by the College’s Modern Languages department coinciding with the cultural celebrations of Irish Week to mark St Patrick’s Day.

Marking the European dimension, Year 8-10 students at the Castlerock Road school were able to join in a range of lively activities, from a Eurovision Song Contest in which all Year 8 students performed in French, German, Irish and Spanish to a multi-lingual game of bingo for all Year 9 students, to an intensely contested European table quiz for all Year 10 students.  Later, as a culmination of Irish week, a lunchtime céilí was held, which is to be followed later in the week by an Irish Mass in the College Chapel.  Meanwhile, throughout all departments of the College, European themed lessons were taking place, with the theme of diversity being explored and a multi-lingual approach being taken to teaching and learning activities.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the European Day, Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, commented that in our increasingly international and diverse society, the day of European Awareness was a timely means of raising both awareness and appreciation of the richness of a multicultural society within which movement between countries is increasingly common. Mr Lenehan paid tribute to Mrs Siobhan Mullan, European and Exchange Co-ordinator, and the members of the French, German, Irish and Spanish departments who had organised the day’s events.
