21/06/2016 LORETO COLLEGE CELEBRATES END OF YEAR MASS

The closing of the academic year was celebrated at Loreto College Coleraine with a special Mass, on Tuesday 21st June.  Celebrated by Father Charles Keaney, the theme of the Mass was New Horizons, and it celebrated the core Loreto values of Justice, Sincerity, Truth, Freedom and Joy.

At the Mass, several members of staff who have embodied the Loreto values were celebrated as they approach retirement and take their leave of Loreto College.  In particular, everyone at Loreto College wished to express their heartfelt thanks to two teachers, Mrs Jane Nugent and Mrs Anne O’Kane, who have, each served for 33 years on the teaching staff.  Mrs Jane Nugent has taught Chemistry at Loreto College as well as serving as Year Head and Pastoral Care Co-ordinator, while Mrs Anne O’Kane has been Head of Mathematics and Numeracy Co-ordinator for many years.  Both teachers have acted as Form Tutors for numerous classes throughout their careers.  Mrs Nugent is a past pupil of Loreto College, while Mrs O’Kane attended Loreto Grammar School Omagh, so both have a lifelong connection with Loreto education. Presentations were made to Mrs Nugent and Mrs O’Kane by the 2016-17 Head Girl, Cariosa O’Harte, and Head Boy, Aidan Boyle.

Speaking on behalf of all the staff and of the Senior Leadership Team, Mr Michael James, College Principal expressed her gratitude to all of those members of staff who were retiring.  Speaking of Mrs Jane Nugent and Mrs Anne O’Kane, Mr James commented that everyone in Loreto College, students and staff, would miss their wisdom, their knowledge, their caring and dedicated approach to everything they did and their tremendous knowledge and passion for their academic subjects.  Mr James also paid tribute to Father Charles Keaney, of St John’s Parish, who is moving on in his career after 13 years in St John’s and as Loreto College’s Chaplain.  Father Keaney was thanked for his friendship and support of Loreto College and wished well for his year’s sabbatical and for the future.
