28/04/2016 SPORTS ROUND-UP

As April draws to a close, there are a few stories about individual successes in a variety of sports.

In Swimming, Year student Finn McEwan has added more medals to his collection, after winning gold and bronze at the Provincial Towns Finals in Ballymena.  Finn decisively out-sprinted his opponents for a convincing win in the 50m Breaststroke, and touched 3rd in a tight finish after a high-quality 100m Individual Medley race. This will be good race practice as Finn now turns his attention to the Irish National Age Group Championships in July.  Finn has met the stringent qualification times in 3 events and will continue his tough training regime in preparation for the country’s highest level age-group meet.

Shannon Baird (Year 8), meanwhile, won Gold in the 50m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and 100m Individual Medley in her age group in the same event.  She went on to win six medals at the Antrim Championships: Gold in 100m Breaststroke, 100m & 400m Freestyle; Silver in 200m Breaststroke; 200m Freestyle & 200m Individual Medley.  Earlier in the month, Shannon had won a Bronze medal in the Ulster Age Groups championships, with qualifying times for the Irish Age Groups championships in July.

Finally, Eoin Mullan (Year 9) won Gold in the 100 metres Freestyle, Silver in the 100 metres Butterfly and Bronze in the 400 metres Individual Medley events at the Ulster Age Group Championships. In the Provincial Towns League Finals, Eoin won Gold in the 50m Freestyle and Silver in the 50m Backstroke and 100m Individual Medley events.  In the Antrim Championships, he won five Gold medals (100m and 200m Butterfly, 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle) and a Silver in the 200m Breaststroke.  Eoin is a member of the Ulster Development Squad and will now go on to compete in the Irish Age Groups championships in July, for which he now has seven qualifying times.

In Karate, Loreto students Emma Mullan (Year 12) and Aidan O’Boyle (Year 13) competed at the Irish International Wadokai Karate Championships in early April, and both were in the medals. Emma took Gold in kata and Bronze in the kumite (fighting) and Aidan also took Silver in the kumite. Both did very well in a tough competition.  At the same competition, John Mullan (Year 11) won a bronze medal in his section.

A few weeks later, Oran and Aidan Somers got medals at the Northern Ireland Karate Championships in Belfast on Sunday. Oran came 2nd in his kumate and Aidan 3rd in his kata. They are part of Limavady Tka club.
