22/02/2007 SUCCESS FOR LORETO TEAM IN PAPERCLIP PHYSICS COMPETITION

A team from Loreto College Coleraine has taken third place in the Northern Ireland heat of the annual Paperclip Physics competition.  Run by the Institute of Physics, this competition sets competitors the task of explaining science to non-scientists, using ordinary household objects.  The regional round of the competition was held at Queen’s University Belfast on 21st February 2007.

Year 13 students Ronan Bradley, Jarlath Bond, Monica Brolly, Daniel McCollam and Brendan Sweeney represented Loreto with a presentation entitled Trebuchet Physics Fun, and their prize for their joint third place was a book entitled Black Holes and Wormholes by Jim Al-khalili.  Loreto College was also represented by a second team, also made up of Year 13 students, who presented a project entitles Dominoes Physics.  The members of this team were Jonathan Cunning, John Dowds, Shane McLaughlin, Ronan McShane and Michael O’Loan.

Both teams were assisted in preparing for the event by Mr Michael James, Head of Physics at Loreto, along with Physics teacher Mr Harry McCullagh and Head of Technology Mr Brian McKenna.  All the students involved, and their teachers, were congratulated on their success by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.
