27/01/2016 LORETO SUCCESS AT DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Cross country runners from Loreto College Coleraine had a successful day at the District Cross Country Championships on 20th January, with several students qualifying for the Ulster Finals.

Over a tough 2500 metre course at the Ulster University, the Intermediate Girls’ Team of Abigail McBroom (Year 12), Anna Morrison (Year 12), Molly Brennan (Year 12) and Niamh Carr (Year 11) finished at the top of the field, consolidating their excellent performances in previous years.  There are high hopes for this team at Loreto: two years ago, the girls won the All Ireland Junior trophy and, despite having suffered through injury, the outlook remains optimistic.  Most of the girls are members of the Springwell Club and the help of Philip Tweedie, Alastair Bratten and others is much appreciated.

Among the younger runners, the Year 8 Boys did exceptionally well, finishing in fourth and eighth places out of 17 schools.

The Intermediate Girls’ team and Tolulope Jide Ojo (Year 9) qualified to represent Loreto and the Coleraine/Derry district at Ulster level.  The Ulster Finals will be held at Mallusk Playing Fields on Wednesday 10th February.

Mr Paul Cunning, Co-ordinator of Cross Country running at Loreto College, congratulated all these talented runners on their District success and wished them well for the Ulster Finals.
