A Loreto team has made history by becoming the College’s first competitive cricket team, through participation in Cricket Ireland’s School Development Strategy.

Under the leadership of Mr John Kildea, the Junior students: James Brown, Padraig Kelly, Connor McGillan, Fiyinfoluwa Owolabi, Michael McConnell, Charlie McKnight, Hirek Cichy, Matthew Byrne, Theo Wall, Christian Quigley, Matthew McGowan, Luke Denton and Oisin McCrudden, took part in their first tournament on 16th December, the Coleraine Indoor Cricket Blitz, alongside beginning teams from Coleraine College and North Coast Integrated College.

The Cricket Ireland School Development Strategy allows cricket to have an all-year playing season, as opposed to being restricted to the Summer Term.  Each participant has the opportunity to develop the three disciplines of the game: battling, bowling and fielding.  The strategy has opened a new sporting opportunity for boys and girls at Loreto – though as yet, no girls have taken part.

In the course of the day’s competition, each participating school fielded two teams.  The two Loreto College teams played three matches each, with each team scoring two wins and one narrow defeat.  Mr John Kildea, who co-ordinated the Loreto cricketers, paid tribute to their enthusiasm and tremendous progress over a short amount of time.  Mr Kildea also thanked Adams McGillan Estate Agents and Longline Surf School who sponsored the Loreto team shirts.  From small beginnings, cricket is generating growing enthusiasm at Loreto College!
