Y12 students who won through to the NI final of the 'Bright Sparks' competition

A group of Year 12 Technology students from Loreto College Coleraine has won through to the Northern Ireland Final of the BBC NI Bright Sparks competition.

The students, Stephanie Paul, Malo Scullion, Daniel Hendrie, Hannah Johnston, and Charles Stuart, with the assistance of Head of Technology Mr Brian McKenna and Technology teacher Mr Raymond McKay, and team reserve Kevin McLaughlin, were filmed for BBC television recently as they successfully won through to this stage of the competition.

On the competition day, the students had to create a machine that could move pieces of gold from one place into a chest using pneumatics or other mechanisms.  Using pneumatics, the students created a sort of robot arm which could rotate a full 360 degrees and raise items in its grip up to a metre.  The students christened their robot “Mophead”.

A group of Year 10 students accompanied the team to Belfast as an audience for the competition: these students benefited from this opportunity to see Technology in action.  The Loreto team now faces the challenge of the Final, in which they and their teachers will have to present their technological inventions in a “Dragon’s Den” style scenario.

The students and their teachers were wished well for this new challenge and congratulated on their success so far in the competition by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College.
