05/10/2015 PENTATHLON SUCCESS FOR LORETO STUDENT

A Loreto College sixth form student has scored a remarkable success in Athletics, qualifying for the All Ireland Multi-Events Pentathlon finals.

Christopher Doherty, a Year 13 student, was one of 19 competitors in the Intermediate Boys age group. Each athlete had to compete in five events: 100m hurdles, 200m sprint, long jump, shot putt and 800m.  The top 4 finishers in each age group qualified for the All Ireland multi events/pentathlon.

Christopher won his heat in 100m hurdles, 2nd in long jump (2 better jumps were disallowed), 2nd in 200m, 5th 800m and 9th in shot putt.  Despite the fact that it was his first time competing in shot putt and 800m, and that he had attempted hurdles only once before, Christopher finished second overall in Ulster, and has qualified for the All Ireland Final.  The Finals will be held on 7 November in Athlone at the International Arena.

Christopher was congratulated on this superb achievement, and wished well for the All Ireland Final, by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
