As a whole school community we have been shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely death due to illness of Y11 pupil Michaela Harkin. Michaela had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia during the summer break and had been receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Unfortunately she failed to respond positively to the treatment and developed complications. She sadly lost her battle with the disease and died on Monday 31st August surrounded by her family, including her sister Courtney who is also a pupil at the college.

Michaela was a former pupil of Ballyhackett Primary School and during her initial three years at Loreto College had blossomed as a student, receiving a Progress Prize at the end of Year 10. She had contemplated becoming a hairdresser in the future, which was reflected in the pride she took with her own appearance.

A quiet and reflective girl she will be greatly missed by her friends and our whole school community. Our prayers and thoughts are with her family and friends at this very difficult time.

May she rest in peace.

If we live, we live to the lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.
