08/05/2015 TOP CHARITY EFFORTS BY LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS

Students and staff from Loreto College Coleraine have been congratulated by College Principal, Mr Michael James, on raising impressive sums of money for two of the school’s designated charities.

Throughout the year from late November, a group of ten Year 13 students, led by Daniel Catterson  and Gianni Papachrisopoulos, sold Northern Ireland Children’s Cancer Fund Daisy pins, in memory of their much-loved friend and classmate Anna McAllister.  The students raised over £1000 within a very short time.  This was just one of a number of fund-raising initiatives carried out in support of the NI Children’s Cancer Fund at Loreto this year.

In the Spring Term, during Lent, Loreto College’s Justice League, under the leadership of Mrs Lorraine McCool, carried out its traditional fund-raising for Trocaire.   A total of £4046 was raised, which will be doubled to £8092 as a result of government funding.  The top fund-raiser in Loreto was Thomas Mailey (8A), raising £65; he was presented with a Jet Centre entertainment voucher in recognition of his effort and commitment.  Top classes were 8A and their Form Teacher Mrs J Nugent, who raised £580.60, 9B and their Form Teacher Mrs S McBroom, who raised £212.03, 10C and their Form Teacher Bean Uí Mhaoláin, raising £100, 11A and their Form Teacher Mrs M Close, raising £273.65, 12A and their Form Teacher Mrs F Pepin, raising £400, 113B and their Form Teacher Mr P Loughran, raising £125.82 and 14B and their Form Teacher Mrs K Brolly, raising £164.04.

Thanking all the staff and students for their efforts and generosity, Social Justice Co-ordinator Mrs Lorraine McCool commented:
“Trócaire is one of the many organisations responding to the crisis in Nepal at the moment and following a direct appeal for aid last week I  was heartened to be able to assure them of our help, with such a generous sum  from Loreto College promised within days. Well done everyone on another successful campaign.”
