20/04/2015 ART SUCCESS FOR LORETO COLLEGE STUDENT

A GCSE student from Loreto College has been named Runner-Up in the 16-18 age group of the Texaco Children’s Art Competition 2015.

Oliwia Widuto, who is in Year 12 at Loreto College, was among the youngest in the top category of the competition.  She won the second prize of €1,000 for her work Gramps on Morphine.

Oliwia’s work was made using digital technology: it was the first time that one of the Competition’s winning entries had been created using such methods.  Professor McGonagle, of the judging panel, commented:

“It doesn’t look like a digital work. It looks like a traditional work, but it’s done entirely through digital technology. It is a different kind of skill altogether, which is amazing as well.”

Oliwia will receive her award at a ceremony at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin in May; her work, along with the other 20 top prize-winning pieces, will be on display in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, until the end of May, as well as in various other galleries throughout Ireland.

Oliwia’s Art teacher, Mrs Michelle McGill, described her as “an amazingly talented and well-deserving student”, congratulating her on her success on behalf of all the staff and students of Loreto College.
