03/03/2015 LORETO GROUP IMPRESS IN TRADITIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION

The Siansa group from Loreto College Coleraine, Tigh Tara, took part in the second round of the All Ireland Siansa competition, run by Gael Linn, in Monaghan on Tuesday 3rd March.

Organised by Gael Linn with support from Foras na Gaeilge, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and Irish Music Magazine, Siansa provides a platform for talented teenage groups who aim to emulate groups such as Téada, Altan, Danú, Dervish etc. While Siansa is essentially a competition, the groups are helped and encouraged along the way by highly regarded traditional musicians. The event is run entirely through the medium of Irish.  Following an initial filtering through the submission of recordings, the Loreto group was among those selected for the Workshop stage of the competition.

Musicians drawn from throughout the school are members of the group: Niamh Mooney (Year 8), Donal Close (Year 10), Cianan Mooney (Year 10), Fearghal Close (Year 11), Aoife Kelly (Year 12), Cariosa O’Harte (Year 12), Conor Pauling (Year 13) and Eimear Dillon (Year 14). The group is led by teacher Mrs Maeve Close.  At the Monaghan Workshop, they had the opportunity to work with well-known traditional musicians as well as hearing the performances of other shortlisted groups.

The Tigh Tara group was commended on progressing to this stage of such a prestigious and competitive event by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College.
