19/12/2014 BUSY AUTUMN TERM CONCLUDES WITH CHRISTMAS SCOR FOR LORETO COLLEGE IRISH DEPARTMENT

The students and teachers of the Irish Department at Loreto College Coleraine have had a busy start to the Autumn Term, taking part in numerous academic and extra-curricular activities.

As always, Loreto  College was represented by several Year 10 teams in the annual Gael Linn Junior quiz. The event took place in The White Horse Hotel, Derry in early October. The quiz was followed by a céilí where all pupils participated in numerous dances such as a high spirited and enthusiastic ‘Waves of Tory’.
To complete a great day, the Gael Linn hosts complimented Loreto’s pupils on their impeccable turnout and keen participation.

Just before the Christmas holidays, all Year 8 students participated in a day of excitement, entertainment, enthusiasm and most importantly, enjoyment as the Irish Department hosted their fifth annual Scór na Nollag; a celebration of craft, music, dance, drama and quiz. In the run up to the big day, the energetic and enthusiastic Year Eight classes made a fantastic contribution in their thorough in-class preparations. Songs were learned off by heart, creative and inspired Christmas cards were produced and dances were practised to perfection. To start off the morning’s proceedings, each class courageously took to the floor and performed their class song. This was followed by the smaller group acts; with groovy moves, instrument playing and Irish dancing being enjoyed by all. An all-encompassing quiz tested our Year Eight pupils, who rose to the task and answered the challenging questions laid before them. Additionally, the pre-submitted Christmas cards were judged on adherence to the guidelines, creativity andoriginality. Each class accumulated marks from all events and prizes were awarded accordingly; the winning class was named at the end of the morning: 8B.

Loreto College’s Irish teachers, Bean Uí Mhianáin and Bean Uí Mhaoláin, commented that they were, as always, very proud of all the participants in the various activities of the Irish Department during a very busy start to the school year.  Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the energy and commitment of the Irish Department in organising and enjoying such a diversity of stimulating events.
