13/10/2014 AMAZING BRAINS WORKSHOP FOR LORETO COLLEGE YEAR 8 PUPILS

All Year 8 pupils at Loreto College Coleraine took part in a study skills workshop facilitated by Amazing Brains on Monday 13th October 2014.

Entitled ‘Blast Off’, the workshop aims to embed the mindset and study habits to succeed at school, allowing for a rewarding journey through secondary school.  The Loreto students enjoyed an upbeat, interactive and fun programme, designed to captivate, motivate and educate young people about their brain and learning. It aims to create a success-oriented mindset amongst students, boost academic performance and foster a positive, lifelong attitude to learning.

Roisin McFeely, Director of Amazing Brains, who led the workshop, urged Year 8 pupils to become success oriented, realising that everyone is ‘smart’ in different ways and discussing learning preferences and multiple intelligences. Encouraging Year 8s to build their self-confidence and self-efficacy and get the most out of their new learning experience, the Amazing Brains leaders Roisin McFeely and Tracy Gray showed how mixing with other students allied to seeing learning as both worthwhile and fun I vital for those who make the most of their time at school.

The session was followed by an Amazing Brains Parent Power seminar on the evening of the same day. Parent Power is a practical, meaningful, activity based 90-minute workshop that empowers parents and gives them the opportunity to help their own children develop the essential study techniques to succeed in schools and exams.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the Amazing Brains workshop leaders for their enthusiasm and commitment to both workshops.  Mr James commented that, following the seminars, Year 8 pupils and their parents were enthused about and prepared for the challenges ahead.
