25/06/2014 HISTORY TRIP FOR LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS

All Year 8 students from Loreto College Coleraine spent a day visiting Carrickfergus in the final week of June, exploring the town’s Norman Castle and St Nicholas’ Church.

In the course of the day, the students had a guided tour of the historic Carrickfergus Castle, seeing the typical Norman Castle architecture for real.  The Year 8 History course revolves around the Normans in Ireland, so it was fascinating for the students to visit St Nicholas’ Church, which had been established in 1182 by John de Courcy.

Mr Bob Murphy, Head of History at Loreto, who co-ordinated the visit, commented that it had afforded the students an ideal opportunity to bring their studies to life, gaining a sense of their own heritage and the part that the historical events which they had studied had played in today’s landscape.
