23/06/2014 IMPRESSIVE DONATION FROM LORETO SVP

The St Vincent de Paul group at Loreto College presented a cheque to representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul from St John’s, Dunboe and St Malachy’s parishes as the school year drew to an end.

The group, led by RE teacher Mr Kevin Conroy, ran a number of fund-raising initiatives this year, as well as participating in weekly visits to Edenmore Residential Home.

In the Autumn term, the Loreto SVP group ran its annual Christmas hamper collection, with a total of 31 hampers being donated to St John’s and St Malachy’s parishes in Coleraine. Also at Christmas, shortbread jars were sold (containing the culinary efforts of SVP group members), while additional funds were raised when the Loreto Junior Choir entertained shoppers in Sainsbury’s with carols.  Throughout the year, the SVP group organized bun sales and sweet sales, both of which proved very popular with students and members of staff.

In total, the SVP group raised £845.50 this year.  All the proceeds go to people in need to help with day to day living. The money helps pay bills, buy furniture, food, school uniforms and fuel. The group members aim to raise even more money for this good cause next year.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to all the members of the Loreto St Vincent de Paul group, and to Mr Conroy, for all their hard work, dedication and concern for the welfare of others throughout the year.
