23/11/2006 SUCCESS FOR LORETO TEAM IN GERMAN DEBATING COMPETITION

A team from Loreto College Coleraine has scored a notable success in a prestigious German debating competition.

Team-members Philip Martin, Fiona Bailey and Benjamin McKillen (Year 14) and Janette McCollum (Year 13) travelled to the German Department of Queen’s University, Belfast to compete in the first round of the annual debating competition run by the Northern Ireland Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research on Friday 17th November, against stiff opposition from Ballyclare High School.  The motion for the highly competitive debate was “This house believes that soap operas are superfluous” and after a challenging and hotly contested debate, the Loreto team emerged victorious.

The Loreto team now progresses to the second round of the competition, which will see them returning to QUB to meet a team from The Royal School, Dungannon in February 2007.  The team-members and their teacher, Head of German Mrs Fionnuala Simpson, were congratulated on this impressive achievement by College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan.
