18/03/2014 LORETO STUDENTS COLLABORATE IN DAY OF DANCE

A group of fourteen Year 9 students from Loreto College Coleraine took part in the Loreto Day of Dance, hosted by the Loreto Convent School, Letterkenny, on Wednesday 12th March.

At the start of the current academic year, the Loreto Education Trust appointed Elaine Dillon from Loreto College Crumlin to the position of Sports Network Development Project Leader for Loreto schools. With the Loreto Trust and Elaine Dillon believing strongly that the strong sporting tradition and history of Loreto schools should be upheld and developed further, a meeting was held, for all teachers involved in PE in all Loreto schools in Ireland, with the aim of involving Loreto schools beyond the Dublin area in inter-school events and competitions.

Loreto College Coleraine’s Head of PE, Mrs Maureen McCullough, who attended the meeting, got involved in arranging some of the many activities to encourage participation by schools from all parts of Ireland. This included the Day of Dance hosted by Loreto Letterkenny, in which the Letterkenny, Coleraine and Crumlin schools participated.

The Day of Dance comprised two dance workshops, led by Mrs Anita McGinley, Head of PE in Loreto Letterkenny, followed by performances from each school. The Loreto College Coleraine students performed a Cheer Pomm dance, which they had choreographed and rehearsed over many hours and weeks in advance of the event. The students who represented Loreto College Coleraine at the event were: Una Clarke, Alisha Convery, Sian Donaghy, Sorcha Duggan, Ellen Ferris, Eve Gardiner, Fionnuala Keane, Courtney McKeague, Kerry McLaughlin, Megan O’Kane, Yasmine Peacock, Klaudia Silakowska, Sylvia Smyth and Orla Wallace.

PE teacher Ms Julie Wilson, who attended the event with the Coleraine students, commented that the Day of Dance had been successful and enjoyable, expressing the hope that it would now be a firm fixture on the inter-Loreto calendar. Moving on from this event, students from Loreto College Crumlin will visit Loreto College Coleraine, en route to a Geography Field Trip to the Giant’s Causeway. While visiting their Coleraine counterparts, the Crumlin students will take part in Trampolining and Archery workshops.

Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the enthusiastic and energetic participation of the Year 9 girls who attended the Day of Dance, and to the spirit of collegial co-operation and friendship between Loreto schools in Ireland and as part of a worldwide network.
