16/01/2014 PRAXIS CARE THANK LORETO COLLEGE FOR FUND-RAISING EFFORTS

A representative of Praxis Care NI has paid tribute to students and staff from Loreto College Coleraine who raised money for the charity during the Autumn Term through a sponsored readathon.

Praxis Care, registered as a charity in 1983, is a major provider of services for adults and children with a learning disability, mental ill health, acquired brain injury and for older people, including people with dementia. The group was established in 2002 by the merging of 3 well established charities in Northern Ireland.

The Sponsored Read was carried out by students from Year 8 -10, and those in Year 11-12 who study English Literature, in aid of Praxis Mental Health Care.  This work was reinforced as a result of a talk to Year 13 by a representative of Praxis to encourage the Year 13 students to help raise awareness of this cause among younger students.  This readathon raised an impressive total of £815, in addition to raising the profile of reading for pleasure throughout the year groups which took part.

In recognition of the generous donation from Loreto College, Geraldine Andrews visited the College on 16th January 2014, to present awards to two students who had raised impressive totals through the Read It campaign.  Cassie McGilligan (Year 9) was presented with an iPad in recognition of having raised a magnificent total of £502.65 while David Brussard (also Year 9) received an Activity Pack, having raised a very generous £71.  The overall total raised by Loreto College’s students through the Praxis Read It initiative was £619.95

Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, paid tribute to the staff and students who had worked hard to raise this generous sum in the Autumn Term, and thanked Geraldine Andrews for her encouragement to the students behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
