14/01/2014 ACTIVE SCHOOLS PROGRAMME FUNDING FOR LORETO COLLEGE

Loreto College have received funding from the ‘Active Schools Programme’ through Sport NI to run an after school club for pupils with a physical disability who attend mainstream schools in the Coleraine, Ballymoney and Ballycastle area. This follows the success of the first NI Junior Paralympic Fun Day which was held in Lagan Valley Leisureplex, Lisburn in September 2013.

The club will be for pupils from Year 5 - year 14. It will run for 8 weeks with 2 sports available each week taken by qualified coaches. The sports will include Indoor Athletics, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Boccia, Tennis and New Age Curling.

The ‘Causeway Paralympic Super Six’ club is being organised with help from Active Community Coaches, Disability Sport NI and a local Paediatric Physiotherapist from Northern Health and Social Care Trust. It is hoped that through this club, children will get the chance to try different sports and will enjoy being able to participate and compete with other children with a physical disability.

It is hoped that if the after-school club proves successful then a similar format could be run through the Council; or the children could be encouraged to join local clubs.
