A busy season of performance and competition ended on a very positive note for the Senior and Junior Choirs of Loreto College Coleraine this week, when both choirs were among the top prizewinners at the Bangor International Choral Festival.

The Bangor International Choral Festival is a prestigious event, drawing entries from throughout Ireland and further afield. In the Senior School Choirs Under 19 group, the Loreto College Senior Choir took first place, and was classed by the adjudicators as “outstanding”. The Senior Choir has had an exciting few weeks recently, taking first place in the Youth section of the Coleraine International Choral Festival and performing an impressive recital of its repertoire at the Loreto Spring Concert. The choir, under the direction of Choirmaster Mr Howard Gillespie, also launched a CD in late April to mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of Loreto education in Coleraine.

Showing tremendous promise for the future, the Loreto College Junior Choir took second place in the School Choirs Under 15 section of the prestigious Bangor event. Also highly praised by the adjudicator, these enthusiastic young singers recently took first place in their section of the Coleraine Music Festival as well as performing with distinction at the Castlerock Road school’s Spring Concert.

Both choirs were praised and thanked by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, for their tremendous achievements and their contribution to the life of the College. Mr Lenehan also paid tribute to Mr Howard Gillespie, Choirmaster, Mrs Annie Sharkey, accompanist, Miss Roisin Stewart, Head of Music and sixth form accompanists Grace McMacken and Kathryn Stelfox for their dedication and success.
