A party of nineteen students and two teachers from two schools in Vechta, Germany, visited Loreto College Coleraine from 5th – 14th March.

The College’s partner schools, Kolleg St Thomas and the Liebfrauenschule, have a long history of exchange visits to Loreto. Alternate years see students from Vechta and Coleraine visiting each other and experiencing daily life in their partner’s home and school. Friendships have been formed between visits, and many of the German visitors were already well acquainted with their hosts. The students were accompanied by Herr Joachim Johanneson and Frau Hildegard Schmitz, who, as well as supervising the well-being of their charges, took part in some cross-curricular team-teaching exercises during their time at Loreto.

During the exchange visit, the German students enjoyed a variety of activities in addition to sampling daily life at Loreto College and in the homes of their host partners. On Monday 7th March, the visitors enjoyed a “Town Challenge” experience in Coleraine town centre, followed by a Mayoral Reception at the Coleraine Council offices. Wednesday 9th March was spent exploring the historic city of Derry, while Friday 11th March was spent sampling the various attractions on offer at the Odyssey complex in Belfast. To complete the trip, the visitors and their hosts enjoyed a tour of the Bushmills Distillery and the Giant’s Causeway.

Head of German Mrs Fionnuala Simpson and Exchanges Co-ordinator Mrs Siobhan Mullan agreed that the exchange visit had as always been of great benefit to the College’s students of German, as well as helping to raise European awareness among the students and staff as a whole.
