28/02/2005 SUCCESS FOR LORETO ECONOMISTS

A team from Loreto College Coleraine has taken third prize in the Area Final of the prestigious Bank of England Target 2.0 Interest Rate Challenge competition.

Team-members Paul Daly, Ria Doherty, Eugene Mullan and Claire Reynolds impressed the judges with their knowledge and presentation skills at the competition, held on 24th February in Manchester, and were delighted to bring home a prize of 350 for their school.

The students had already taken first place in the Northern Ireland heat of the competition in December. The competition gives teams of students age 16-18 the chance to take on the role of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, assess economic conditions and the outlook for inflation and tell panels of judges what interest rate they would set to achieve the Government's inflation target of 2.0%.

It is a remarkable achievement for the Loreto College Economics Department that this is the fourth consecutive year in which a team from the Castlerock Road school has taken one of the top prizes place in the Area Final. The students, along with their teacher, Miss Belinda Toner, were congratulated by Loreto College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan on behalf of everyone at the school.
