17/11/2011 LORETO COLLEGE SPEAKERS IMPRESS AT BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN EVENT

A team of students from Loreto College Coleraine took part in the annual Association of Business and Professional Women Public Speaking event, held in the Michelin Athletic Club, Ballymena on 15th October.

At the event, each school was represented by a team of three speakers.  Each team had to conduct a public meeting in miniature, with the students acting, respectively, as Chairperson, Speaker and Expresser of Thanks.  The topic for discussion was ‘For the European Union, For the Economy.’  Loreto College was represented by Caoimhe Bond (Year 14), Katherine Giddins (Year 14) and Ben Levy (Year 12).  Acting as Speaker, Katherine Giddins delivered a speech which had been written by fellow student and senior debating team member Jack McCann (Year 13).

Despite an excellent performance by the Loreto College team, the group lost out narrowly to a team from St Louis’ GS Ballymena, which was named Regional Winner and will go through to the Northern Ireland final.

The judges commented that they were extremely impressed by the standard of all the teams.  Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, paid tribute to the four students who had contributed to the College’s creditable representation in the competition, and to Mrs Siobhan Mullan, Co-ordinator of Public Speaking at the school, who had helped them to prepare their speeches.
