Students who represented Loreto College Coleraine in the BBC Shakespeare 'Off By Heart' competition

Three students from Loreto College Coleraine took part with some distinction last week in the Northern Ireland heat of the BBC’s Shakespare ‘Off By Heart’ competition.

Students Ben Levy (Year 12), Conal McGinley (Year 11) and Rhiannon Turner (Year 11) were selected by Mrs Oonah McEwan, Head of Drama at Loreto College, to represent their school in the Northern Ireland regional heat of this UK-wide competition.  The three students attended the regional heat and workshop, delivered in collaboration with the Shakespeare Schools Festival, with skilled teachers and professional actors.  At the event, contestants were expected to know their one chosen speech for the initial stage of the competition off by heart and were judged on their delivery and articulation, comprehension, physical expression used to enhance meaning and their potential for further development.

At the Belfast event, two students were selected to be filmed, from among all those taking part, representing schools from all parts of Northern Ireland. Loreto College’s Ben Levy was selected as one of these ‘top two’, from which the overall winner of the Northern Ireland heat will be selected.  Ben will be informed just before Christmas whether or not he has been successful in his quest to go to Stratford Upon Avon as one of nine UK finalists.

All three students and Mrs McEwan were congratulated on this tremendous achievement by Mr Michael James, Principal of Loreto College, on behalf of all the staff and students of the school: Mr James added that everyone in the College would be delighted to see Ben progress even further in the competition next term.
