The Autumn term at Loreto College Coleraine drew to a close last week with the traditional day of festive fund-raising for the Loreto Missions. This was the culmination of a busy term’s work by students from throughout the school, who raised an impressive amount of money for a variety of good causes.

To date, £340 has been raised for Macmillan Nurses and £108 for the National Blind Children’s Society. A number of senior students took part in the annual Concern Fast in late November, raising a total of £745.00.

All Year 8 and Year 9 students took part in the annual Sponsored Spell, and all Year 10 carried out sponsored circuit training, raising funds for the Northern Ireland Hospice and Father Alex Teputepu’s Nutrition Programme in Malawi. The amount raised in this endeavour was an impressive £3798.05. In December, £232.50 was raised for LASCO through the sale of Christmas cards designed by students and produced by the Loreto Art and Design Department.

The Mission Day saw a packed schedule for students and staff, with a wide variety of activities on offer, ranging from hotly contested staff versus students netball and soccer fixtures to a one-day beauty salon offering hair styling and a nail-bar. Culinary delights were available all day in a Café, which proved very popular; for the energetic, a céilí was held. For many, the highlight came with the lunchtime concert in the College Hall; others were enthralled by the magical element of the Santa’s Grotto, complete with fortune telling by Mrs Claus. With films and a lively sixth form table-quiz in the afternoon, all students were able to enjoy a full schedule of activities. The 2004 Mission Day raised a record-breaking total of £5266.10 (and counting) for the Loreto Missions in India and Peru.
