A group of young scientists from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, had an extremely successful day at the Sentinus Young Innovators Exhibition at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast on Tuesday 14th June.

Students Sean McKendry, Jack McCann, Thomas McMullan and Vincent McMullan (all Year 12) and their teacher Mr Brian McKenna all returned home from the event with major awards.

Sean McKendry took the Queen’s University Belfast Physics and Astronomy Award for his research entitled ‘From Cracking Clay to Basalt Columns’.

Meanwhile Jack McCann and brothers Vincent and Thomas McMullan will represent Northern Ireland at the Big Bang Science Fair to be held in Birmingham in March 2012. Thomas and Vincent’s project was on the physics of Flipping, Falling, Tumbling Cards while Jack researched the dendritic crystallization of potassium bromide.

All four students had already received major awards at the annual BT Young Scientist and Engineering Fair held in Dublin in January, while Jack had represented Ireland in Los Angeles last month, winning an award at international level.

As if all this were not enough, Loreto College’s Head of Technology, Mr Brian McKenna, who has a distinguished, career-long history of guiding students in Science projects to represent their school at local, national and international levels, was named STEM Teacher of the Year in a new award presented by St Mary’s University College Belfast.

Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated Mr McKenna and his four students on these tremendous achievements and on an entire year of accolades, on behalf of all the staff and students of the College.
