19/05/2011 SUCCESS FOR LORETO COLLEGE ATHLETES AT NEBSSA GAMES

A group of young athletes have represented Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, with great distinction at the annual Northern Eastern Area Board athletics heats hosted by Coleraine Academical Institution.

Those taking part were rather disappointed by the showery weather after such fine weather during the Easter break!  However, after a lot of hard work, the students’ training paid off, and nine students from Loreto College successfully reached the Finals.

The NEBSSA Finals were held on May 17th at the Antrim Forum, on yet another drizzly day. Among the Loreto College students, Eilis McNamee (Year 11) withdrew from competition due to study commitments (she has won a Finals medal in 100m every year since Year 8).  However, the other Loreto College  students out performed athletes from other schools and returned home with the several medals.

Victoria Bell (Year 10) took Gold in the Javelin competition, and goes on to represent Loreto College and the NEELB area board at the Ulster Finals on Saturday 21st May.  Cliodhna McIlvenny (Year 11) took Silver in the High Jump competition: although Cliodhna beat the Gold medallist in the heats, she slipped on her final jump.  Finally, Conor Pauling (Year 9) took Bronze in the Long Jump competition.

Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College, commented: “Congratulations  are due to all our athletes, including those who tried out for the school team, staying for training on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, and two our three medallists.”  Mrs McCullough also paid tribute to her colleague Mr Paul Byrne, who had assisted with coaching.  Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated all the successful young athletes and their coaches on these impressive achievements.
