19/05/2011 MARY WARD PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION AT LORETO COLLEGE COLERAINE

The annual inter-Loreto Mary Ward public speaking competition took place in Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, on Wednesday 18th May 2011.

The competition brings together students from two Loreto schools: Loreto Grammar School Omagh and Loreto College Coleraine, and is hosted in each venue in turn.  The competition seeks to highlight student awareness of the work of Mary Ward, the founder of the Loreto Order, as well as acting as an opportunity for students from the two sister schools to spend some time together.

This year’s competition drew a particularly strong entry from both schools, and the students were praised by the panel of adjudicators for the high standard of their speeches and the enthusiasm and dedication with which they participated in the event.  The day-long competition was adjudicated by Sr Anne McLaughlin of the Loreto Community, Coleraine, Mrs Siobhan McCarry, Head of RE at Loreto College Coleraine, and Mrs Caragh Little, Head of English at Loreto College Coleraine. Competitors were invited to present speeches on a range of topics, including ‘Mary Ward is possibly the most remarkable Englishwoman of the 17th century’, ‘Honesty is always the best policy’, ‘The Importance of Good Manners in today’s world’ and ‘World Peace is an impossible dream’ – topics all closely linked to the values of the ethos underpinning Loreto education worldwide.
