15/04/2011 DOUBLE TRIUMPH FOR LORETO COLLEGE CHEERLEADERS

Two cheerleading dance teams from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, have taken top awards at the Northern Ireland Schools’ Championships for cheerleading and pom-dancing.

In the Senior section of the competition, the Loreto Legends, all Year 13 students who trained for the event during their PE lessons throughout the year, took first place.  The team-members: Clare Magee, Rachel Magee, Seana McCracken, Niamh McGahon, Orlagh McNicholl, Hannah Morren, Caragh Rafferty, Katie Shaw, Sophie Webber, Shannon Mullan and Laura McKeague were trained by Ms Karen Graham in preparation for the competition.

In the Key Stage 3 Cheerleading section of the competition, the second Loreto team, Loreto Lasers, took third place.  Again trained by Ms Karen Graham, the team-members Maeve Lofthouse, Riona Lofthouse, Caite Skelly, Eliza Richardson, Caitlin Richardson, Theresa McIlwaine, Nicole McNicholl, Ursula Molloy, Sarah Purvis, Erin Ni Shandair, Abbey Fleming, Hannah McMullan, Christine McNally and Taylor Archer had devoted numerous Monday afternoons to training sessions in preparing their complicated routine.

Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College, paid tribute to Ms Karen Graham and to the members of both dance and cheer teams, saying that Ms Graham and the students had worked very hard and demonstrated tremendous team spirit in preparation for the competition and on the competition day itself.  Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated both teams and Ms Karen Graham on these tremendous achievements.
