The annual Mary Ward Public Speaking competition, which brings together students from four Loreto Schools in the North West, was hosted by Loreto College, Coleraine on Monday 14th April 2003.

The competition, in which students from the Castlerock Road school competed against representatives of Loreto Grammar School, Omagh, Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny and Loreto Primary, Letterkenny, seeks to strengthen links between Loreto schools in Ireland and also to raise student awareness of the founder of the Loreto Order, Mary Ward.

Students in the Junior section (Primary school) were asked to speak on the topic of “Mary Ward: a Woman for all Seasons.” In this section, Carol-Ann Conway was placed first, Joanne O’Donnell second and Tara Callan third – all three girls represented Loreto Primary School, Letterkenny.

Entrants for the Intermediate (Years 8-10) class spoke on the topic: “Mary Ward is possibly the most remarkable Englishwoman of the 17th Century.” Kathy Gallagher and Christine Conway, both of Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny took first and second place respectively, while Fiona McAleer of Loreto Grammar, Omagh was placed third. Loreto College Coleraine was excellently represented in this section by Benjamin McKillen, Rosanna Jack and Maria Ward.

Finally, in the Senior Section (Years 11-14), top honours went to the visitors from Omagh, with Edel McCullagh taking first place. Orla Rodgers of Loreto College Coleraine was placed second (losing out by just one mark) and Aoife Laird (Loreto Grammar, Omagh) took third place.

Mrs Siobhan Mullan, co-ordinator of Public Speaking at the College, commented that the day had been most successful and enjoyable, and thanked adjudicator Mrs Celine McKenna (St Mary’s High School, Limavady) for her hard work in selecting winners from among the talented speakers who took part.
