Elizabeth McWilliams, a sixth form student at Loreto College Coleraine, was named Outstanding Ulster Sports Personality of the Year at an awards ceremony earlier this week.

The award, presented by Dame Mary Peters on behalf of the Ulster Sports and Recreation Trust, is testimony to Elizabeth’s outstanding achievements and enterprise in her chosen sport of athletics.

An accomplished 800 metres runner and current Ulster Schools’ Senior Champion, Elizabeth has taken part in local, national and international events, including the 2003 Youth Olympics in Paris. In recent months, she has extended her competitive range to include the 1500 metres event, in order to help her endurance for outdoor 800 metre races: in her second ever competitive 1500 metres, at the Irish Indoor Senior Championships held at the Odyssey Arena in February, she took third place, taking 5 seconds off her personal best over that distance.

In the coming weeks, Elizabeth will represent Ireland as part of the Under 20 team to race in Cardiff over 800 metres against England, Wales and Loughborough University. In the months ahead, she will be aiming to reach in World Junior qualifying time of 2:08, with the ambition of competing in the World Junior Championships to be held in Italy in July. She has already achieved the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Melbourne, Australia next November.

Elizabeth was delighted with her latest accolade, and expressed thanks to her sponsors, Brooks, and Philip and Eddie McIntyre as well as her coaches, team-mates and all those who have supported her. She was congratulated by Loreto Principal Mr Brian Lenehan and wished well for the competitive season ahead on behalf of all the staff and students of Loreto College.
