07/04/2004 LORETO SPORTS STARS ON NATIONAL STAGE

Three rising talents among the sports stars of Loreto College Coleraine have distinguished themselves on the national stage in recent weeks.

Oonagh McFerran, currently in Year 13 at Loreto College, was selected as a member of the Northern Ireland Under 19 Netball squad which will took part in the European Youth tournament recently. This is the pinnacle of an already successful career in netball for Oonagh, who plays for the Loreto Senior Team, Coleraine Ladies’ Netball team and is already an experienced competitor at national level.

Kathy McGouran, currently in Year 10 at the Castlerock Road school, was selected for the North Eastern Education and Library Board Development Squad in Hockey. She played for the North Eastern Board team at the Area Board tournament held at Queen’s University Playing Fields on 30th March, coming home with a winner’s medal. Kathy, despite her youth, has already had an outstanding sporting career: since the age of 11, she has represented her region in athletics, cross country, camogie and hockey.

Established Loreto sports talent Elizabeth McWilliams, recently crowned Outstanding Sports Personality of the Year, added to her accolades as she set off for a week’s warm weather training in Tenerife by being named as a County Antrim All-Star for Athletics.

Meanwhile, with these three outstanding talents, among many others, to emulate, the youngest students at Loreto have had an inspired opening year in local competitions. The Year 8 Netball team, undefeated this year, were winners of the Coleraine and District Netball tournament which was held at Loreto on 10th March. Not to be outdone, the Year 8 Hockey Team shared first place with Coleraine High School in the Derry and Antrim Year 8 Hockey Tournament held at Dalriada School on 11th March.

Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College, congratulated all the individuals and teams involved on their commitment and dedication, while Loreto College Principal Mr Brian Lenehan expressed his delight and congratulations on these tremendous achievements.
