11/06/2010 LORETO COLLEGE SVP GROUP COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF FUND-RAISING

The St Vincent de Paul group from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, concluded a very successful year’s fundraising on Friday 11th June 2010 with presentations to representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul from St John’s and St Malachy’s Parishes, Coleraine.

Led by Year 13 students, along with RE teacher Mr Kevin Conroy, the SVP group took part in weekly visits to the Edenmore Care Home, adjacent to the school, as well as organising a number of fund-raising activities through the course of the year.

Having started the year with Halloween Bun Sale, which raised an impressive £420, the group went on to its next initiative, which was the school-wide collection of contributions for Christmas hampers.  This year they adopted the motto, ‘Waste not, want not’ as they used the boxes from the new school computers, as hampers. An outstanding total of 30 hampers were collected for less well-off families in the local community.  Also at Christmas, the school tradition of selling SVP Christmas cards, designed by aspiring artists in the junior school, continued, raising an impressive sum.

The group also contributes to the wider SVP community, taking part in a street collection held in Limavady, helping to raise over £2000. A quiz night was held in St Malachy’s Parish Centre providing some topical entertainment and raising a total of £280. In its most recent fund-raising event, SVP held a band night in Limavady, which sparked a lot of interest and helped to raise an astounding £811.Throughout the year, the members of SVP have worked extremely hard, playing an active role in school life, supporting a worthy cause and raising a grand total of £1511.

On Friday 11th June, £300 was presented to Mr Jim Heron, representing Fr Brendan McCarron, who is currently at work in the Missions.  £1200 was presented to Mrs Bernie Cosgrove (St John’s Parish Coleraine) and Mrs Eimear McGuigan (St Malachy’s Parish Coleraine) for those within the local community who are struggling financially.

All three representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul who visited Loreto College on 11th  June paid tribute to the dedication, enthusiasm and generosity of the student group, who provide such a fine example of the altruistic spirit of the young.  Bean Uí Mhaoláin, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, congratulated the students and their leader, Mr Kevin Conroy, for their tremendous efforts and energy in the service of others throughout the year.
