10/06/2010 LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS ENJOY STEM CAREERS EVENT

In mid June, after the rigours of the Summer exams, all Year 11 Chemistry students at Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, had the opportunity to attend a half-day STEM event to enhance their awareness of career opportunities in the STEM area: Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The event was led by three past pupils of Loreto College: Etain McGuinness, who is now a Doctor, Ailis Donnelly, who has just finished her PhD in Pharmacy, and Neil Mullan, who is now working as a Design Engineer.  All three gave a stimulating and lively insight into their own career development, the realities and routines of their working lives, and into the opportunities open to young students of science.

Miss Maria Flannelly, Head of Careers at Loreto College, commented that the day had been at once useful and refreshing as an introduction for the students of the vast range of opportunities open to them, giving them a real-world context for their scientific studies and their career planning. Mr Frank Scullion, Head of Science, commented that the event had helped to give the students a valuable insight into the opportunities open to them if they succeed in and persist with their study of STEM subject, whether at GCSE, A level or at university level.
