26/05/2010 PRIMARY PUPILS HAVE A TASTE OF SCIENCE AT LORETO COLLEGE

Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, played host to pupils from three local primary schools on Wednesday 26th May 2010, for a special “Taste of Science” event.

Primary 4 pupils from St Malachy’s PS Coleraine, Primary 5 pupils from St John’s PS Coleraine and Primary 6 pupils from St Colum’s PS Portstewart spent an enjoyable morning in Loreto College, as part of the Specialist School initiative.  In the course of a busy morning of hands-on activity, the pupils made rockets in the new Technology building, did “Chemistry set” experiments in the Chemistry labs and observed ladybirds from the Loreto grounds, having spent time with the turtle, hamster and stick insects in the Loreto Biology Department.

The day proved to be a great success.  Specialist School Primary Links co-ordinator Mrs Sheila McBroom commented that the event would continue to be a tradition throughout the years of Loreto College’s Science Specialism, and paid tribute to the Year 11 and Year 9 Loreto College students who had assisted in the running of the day’s activities. Mrs McBroom also commented on the enthusiasm and interest of the visiting pupils. Mr Michael James, Specialist School co-ordinator, and Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal, praised all the Primary pupils who took part in the event for their great enthusiasm, and their receptiveness to new learning opportunities.
