22/04/2010 SUCCESS FOR LORETO COLLEGE IN PHYSICS COMPETITION

Two teams from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, took first place in the Senior and Junior sections of the Physics At Home competition, which was held in Queen’s University Belfast in late March 2010.

The competition sees secondary school Physics students demonstrate a physical principle to a non-scientist, using only basic equipment available at home. The event is open to year 11- 14 students.

First place in the Senior section went to Year 13 students Bronagh Bogues, Chris Kwong, Shane Mullan and Luke Stuart, who gave a five minute presentation explaining why conductors which have a current passing through them experience a force in a magnetic field.  In the Junior section, first place was taken by Year 11 students Dermot Carey, James Granleese, Thomas McCann and Thomas McMullan.  This group’s prize-winning presentation was an explanation of why soap bubbles form, and involved them blowing a giant bubble and putting their hands through it to place objects inside without breaking the bubble. It did actually work and the audience were suitably impressed. In both cases the groups were only allowed to use items they would find at home, and were not allowed electricity or gas.

The students and their teacher, Head of Physics Mrs Maeve Close, were congratulated on this impressive achievement by Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, on behalf of all the staff and students of the college.
