18/03/2010 LORETO COLLEGE STUDENTS SUPPORT NATIONAL NO SMOKING DAY

A group of students from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, has been rewarded for some excellent work in support of National No Smoking Day 2010, through participation in a local competition organized by Coleraine Borough Council.

The competition, which was aimed at Year 10 students, asked students to design a resource based on the theme for No Smoking Day 2010: ‘breaking the chain of smoking’. The competition judges requested posters, poetry, songs, art sculptures or displays: one class from Loreto College, 10A, worked on a joint project with their English teacher, Mrs Lorraine McCool, and their Art & Design teachers, Mr Paul Cunning and Miss Michelle McGarvey.  The 24 members of 10A produced a wonderful array of resources, including a clever 3D sculpture which depicted enormous papier mache cigarettes formed into a chain, to represent the imprisonment of addition.  The students also wrote and illustrated poems to form a background display to accompany and contextualise their sculpture.

Taking first prize in the competition, the students from Loreto College were rewarded with a cash award for the school and the honour of having their work on display in the Diamond Centre, Coleraine, on National No Smoking Day and beyond it.

Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated the members of this creative and enterprising Year 10 class, and their teachers Mrs McCool, Mr Cunning and Miss McGarvey, on this tremendous success.
