A Year 14 student at Loreto College Coleraine has won through to represent Northern Ireland in the prestigious annual Rotary Youth Development Leadership competition. The competition, sponsored by Marks and Spencer, involves several rounds of testing interviews at local, regional and provincial level. Each candidate was asked a number of questions about leadership, including analytical questions about leadership displayed by Margaret Thatcher. The students were also asked about the expansion of the EU and the consequent effects on Northern Ireland, and about the advantages and disadvantages of the single European currency.

Caroline Cavanagh, representing Loreto College, was selected as one of only three young people to represent Northern Ireland at a special Euroscola event at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Caroline will join approximately 500 young people from throughout Europe in a day’s debating of European issues. Her six-day trip will include three days in Paris and three days in Strasbourg.

Caroline has a history of success through her years at Loreto College: a top achiever at GCSE and A Level, she is currently Sports Captain and a Senior Prefect at the Castlerock Road school, taking part in numerous extra-curricular activities including Netball, Hockey, Young Enterprise and the Editorial Committee of the School Magazine. Caroline is also well known in her native Ballycastle for her dedicated work in the leadership team of the North Antrim Youth Association.

Mr Brian Lenehan, Principal of Loreto College, congratulated Caroline on this tremendous achievement and wished her well for her trip to Strasbourg.
