The Loreto College IFS Student Investor Challenge 2009 winners in New York

A group from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, travelled to New York recently, as part of the prize for winning the UK-wide IFS Student Investor Challenge competition.

Accompanied by their teacher, Head of Economics Mr Gerry McGouran, and Roderick and Vivienne McKee from IFS, students Andrew Crozier, Elizabeth Lane, Aine Quigg and John Ward spent a week exploring New York, combining tourist destinations with a valuable insight into the city’s financial institutions. The team had won the all expenses paid trip, along with £200 spending money each and £2000 for the Loreto College Economics Department, as a reward for their impressive performance against challenging opposition in the UK Final of this prestigious competition.

In the course of a busy week, the students and their teacher had the opportunity to present their winning talk on the state of the economy to the British Consulate, as well as touring the Federal Bank Gold Reserve and the New York Stock Exchange.  They enjoyed guided tours of New York’s City Hall of market giant Bloomberg, and were especially delighted to have the opportunity to meet the Mayor of New York, Michael R Bloomberg.

The Loreto College party also enjoyed trips to the Empire State Building, many of the city’s famous department stores, and a few excellent restaurants.  A particular highlight was a chartered helicopter ride over Manhattan.

Returning home from the adventure of a lifetime, the four students agreed that they had been greatly enthused by their week in New York to continue their study of Economics with the incentive of the incredible opportunities of career and lifestyle which they had encountered during their week in New York.
