25/06/2009 JUNIOR PRIZEGIVING AT LORETO COLLEGE COLERAINE

The annual Junior Prizegiving at Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, took place in the College Hall on Wednesday 24th June 2009.  The Prizegiving highlights the academic and personal achievements of the students in Years 8-10 at the College.

Welcoming the students and staff to the Prizegiving, Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal, said:

“Looking back to last September the year just seems to have flown past and the senior pupils tell me each year just seems to get quicker and quicker.

“I suppose we could think of the passage of time like a computer starting up.  When we are waiting on it, it seems to take a longer time, even though it may be only 20 – 30 seconds.  If we do something in between, the computer has booted up when we come back, and we don’t have to wait on it.

“So I’m delighted that the year has passed so quickly because it’s an indication of how busy the school is and how busy you are in school.

“Your studies are of great importance and I commend you for your diligence and hard work preparing for your summer examinations and throughout the year.  Everyone in this school always tries to do their best – by doing ordinary things well, we will achieve our best and when you do your best you are your best.

“I’m also delighted with your participation in the life of the College.  There are a whole host of extra-curricular activities, sports, clubs, competitions and various school productions and it’s wonderful to see the enjoyment and camaraderie you get out of these, not to mention the numerous successes.  Your participation in the life of the school brings a great vibrancy and richness to the school.

“Every one of you has talents, strengths and interests that we try to develop with you.  Every one of you contributes to the life of the school.  A particular feature of this school has always been the way in which our pupils have looked out for each other and stood up for what is right.  And I hope that will always be a feature of the school.

“Although the school year is almost over I would encourage all of you to get involved in the life of the school next year, in the host of activities that go on after school every day.  I promise you, you won’t regret it.

“The school is, however, much more than about study, subjects, examinations and all the after school activities.  The school is your school.  So the school is about you as young people, about your hopes and aspirations.  When you leave here you won’t be judged on your examination results, or the medals or cups you have won.  No!  You’ll be judged on the type of person you are.  How respectful you have been to members of staff; how considerate you have been to each other; how well you have stood up for what you see as right; how courteous and mannerly you are when there are visitors and guests in the school; how well you use your gifts and talents to help others in need of help.

“So, boys and girls, it is very important that you have an opportunity to celebrate and take pride in the achievements of your school over the last year and how you contribute to making it better and better.”

Mr Lenehan continued by giving a summary of the events and achievements of the 2008-2009 academic year.  The prizes were distributed as follows:
