18/06/2009 LORETO COLLEGE SVP GROUP COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF FUND-RAISING

The St Vincent de Paul group from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, concluded a very successful yearís fundraising on Thursday 18th June 2009 with presentations to representatives of SVP from Coleraine and Limavady.

Led by Year 14 student presidents Gerard Carlin, Catherine Diamond and Aisling OíNeill, along with Head of RE Mr Kevin Conroy, the SVP group took part in weekly visits to the Edenmore Care Home, adjacent to the school , as well as organising a number of fund-raising activities through the course of the year.†

Having started the year by helping out at a local street collection, the SVP group raised approximately £60 through the sale of Fireside Quiz sheets in October 2008.† After the Halloween break, the next initiative was the school-wide collection of contributions for Christmas hampers: an impressive total of 49 hampers was donated to the St Vincent de Paul groups from St Johnís and St Malachyís parishes, Coleraine, for less well-off families in the local community.† Also at Christmas, the school tradition of selling SVP Christmas cards, designed by aspiring artists in the junior school, continued, raising over £417.†

Later in the school year, the group took part in a Bag Packing day in Tescoís, Ballymoney, raising over £700.† Just before the Easter break, a table quiz was held in the Premier Inn, Coleraine, raising over £300.† This brought the total raised since September by the Loreto SVP group to an impressive £1644.† On 18th June, £1000 was donated to the Coleraine branches of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, which was presented to Mr Tony Fisher of St Malachyís parish and Mrs Bernie Cosgrove of St Johnís and Dunboe parish.† A further £300 was donated to a church and school building project in Africa, which is supported by the Limavady branch of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.†

The representatives of the Society of St Vincent de Paul who visited Loreto College on 18th June paid tribute to the dedication, enthusiasm and generosity of the student group, who provide such a fine example of the altruistic spirit of the young.† Mrs Lorraine McCool, Social Justice Co-ordinator at Loreto College, congratulated the students and their leader, Mr Kevin Conroy, for their tremendous efforts and energy in the service of others throughout the year.
