A team of sixth form students from Loreto College Coleraine represented Northern Ireland at the semi-finals of the ProShare Student Investor competition in Manchester last week, and were selected to take part in the competitionís UK Finals.

The ProShare Student Investor Programme, available free to all secondary schools and colleges in the UK enables students to gain a broad understanding of personal finance, the role of the stock market in raising finance for business as well as hands-on experience in stock market investment. The resources and activities also help to develop key transferable skills in the areas of presentation, communication, monitoring and evaluation, analysis and interpretation, decision-making and teambuilding. The ProShare competition aims to teach investment skills and to help students understand how companies raise money and the role of the financial markets and the Stock Exchange in the economy.

Team-members Ria Doherty, Niall Dowds, Aedan McCotter and John McGill impressed the judges with the depth of their knowledge and their excellent presentation skills. Mr Gerry McGouran, Head of Economics at Loreto College, who worked with the team in preparation for the competition, praised the students for their hard work, initiative and enthusiasm.
