05/06/2009 PRIMARY PROBLEM SOLVING IN LORETO SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

On Thursday 4th June 2009, Primary 7 pupils from St John’s Primary School Coleraine, their teacher Miss Marie O’Neill and classroom assistant Mrs Roisin Millar visited Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, and took part in a Problem Solving Science Challenge.

The problem the pupils were asked to solve was “Which teapot should granny use to keep her tea warm for longer?”  They were asked to bring this investigation into the laboratory and use painted test tubes to represent the teapots.  Students monitored the temperature of water in the test tubes for twenty minutes, using recently purchased dataloggers.  They then took the dataloggers to the College’s new Science computer room where they were able to analyse the data they had recorded.  All students printed a results table and graph of their results.

Chemistry teachers Miss Maria Flannelly and Mrs Jane Nugent were the facilitators for this visit and there was a guest appearance from Miss Flannelly’s granny.  The visit was very successful and St John’s pupils developed their problem solving and ICT skills as well as their ability to work with others.  The pupils solved the problem with ease and had an enjoyable time doing so.  It is hoped that this will be an annual event.

Mrs Jane Nugent, Partner School Links co-ordinator at Loreto College, commended the St John’s pupils for their enthusiasm and hard work throughout the exercise, and paid tribute to her Chemistry department colleague Miss Maria Flannelly, commenting that the morning had been an enjoyable and worthwhile exercise for all participants.
