13/05/2009 INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY STARS SWAP THEIR STICKS IN LORETO COLLEGE TRAINING SESSION

Two of the International Hockey Scholars who have been playing with the Ulster Elks Women’s Hockey Club at the Jordanstown Campus of the University of Ulster this season travelled to the North Coast to join girls from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, for a lesson in their basic stick skills on Monday 11th May 2009.

However, the hockey sticks were left behind and replaced with Camogie Sticks!

Philippine Berly (Senior French International) and Frances Kreft (Senior New Zealand International) had never seen Hurling or Camogie in their home countries but were given the chance to experience the game first hand in a visit to the Loreto College sports grounds.

The two International Hockey stars were joined by coaches of the Ulster Elks Ricky Lee and Scott Beattie.  Ricky Lee commented; “I have been involved coaching hockey at Loreto this season and have seen the Camogie skills of the girls coming through during their hockey practice.”

Lee continued, “As a coach it is interesting to watch and participate in other sports and get ideas from the techniques used by players and of course the methods of coaching used by other coaches.  The experience was certainly worthwhile for my own development as a coach, but I know the two girls certainly appreciated the opportunity to give Camogie a go before they go back to their native countries.”

Mrs Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College, paid tribute to the College’s Head of Irish Béan Uí Mhaínaín, an experienced Camogie coach at club and county level, who shared her skills and expertise with the group – including some coaching through the Irish language, to make the learning experience complete.
