A team from Loreto College Coleraine, Specialist School, returned home triumphant this week as UK champions in the prestigious IFS Student Investor competition.

Team-members Andrew Crozier, Elizabeth Lane, Aine Quigg and John Ward (all Year 13) were among the top eight groups to qualify from the regional finals in late March.† The students, accompanied by their teacher Mr Gerry McGouran (Head of Economics at Loreto College) travelled to the headquarters of the IFS, in Londonís financial district, to contest the UK Final against stiff opposition from throughout the UK.† At a tightly-contested event, much was at stake, with generous prizes and a considerable degree of prestige on offer.† In the final, the teams had to give a presentation on the reasons for, and solutions to, the current financial difficulties facing the UK.† This presentation was following by detailed questioning from the panel of adjudicators.† The Loreto team took first place, winning high praise from the competitionís judging panel.

Success and high praise is not all the Loreto team brings home, however: the students, along with their teacher, will enjoy a week-long, all-expenses paid educational trip to New York, once they have finished their AS Level examinations in June.† They also won £2000 prize money for their school, and £200 each.† The trip to New York will include excursions to the financial district as well as some of the cityís famous landmarks.

The students and Mr McGouran were congratulated on their tremendous success Ė being named the top student investors in the UK - by Mr Brian Lenehan, College Principal, on behalf of all the staff and students of the school.
